Orion In E Flat { 3 }

I’m not actually sure how I came up with the idea for this shot… I guess I just stumbled upon it.  After trying to shoot outside in the freezing cold with minimal success (and patience), I wearily retreated inside to warm up. While sitting in my living room, still anxious to snap a few shutters, I noticed my roommate’s guitar laying up against the couch. To make a long story short, after brainstorming some possilities and day dreaming off on some tangents, I ended up with a green laser pointer in hand, my camera on a tripod, and the guitar unmoved from where I first noticed it.

Not knowing where I was going with this shot, I just stopped my camera down and started shining the laser pointer on the strings. Naturally, I some how found a way to incorporate astronomy into this mid-day escapade, eventually deciding to use the green laser pointer to paint (with light) the constellation Orion on the guitar strings. After an hour and a half of trial and error, I ended up with this image: A long exposure (13 seconds to be exact) of a guitar, propped up against a couch, on my knees, trying to carefully color these stubborn strings.

    Creative, and also an activity that would completely fry my patience. You’ve got a knack for the long exposures for sure. Nice work!

    Orion in a guitar! Nice work Danny..very creative and a nice job of manufacturing Orion with the green laser! Did you try to make Rigel and Betelguise brighter or would it be too hard to snap? How about different laser colors to get the star colors as they look in the constellation? Very nice!

    Thanks! :)
    I did try to make Rigel and Betelguise brighter, but it took over an hour just to get the shot I have. It was hard enough keeping the laser pointer off of the other strings. That is a great idea about the different colors though! I will have to try that sometime!
